Legacy Gifted Program
Gifted and Talented Education at Legacy Traditional Schools

Meeting our gifted students at their level
Legacy’s Gifted Program is a pull-out learning experience designed to help gifted students thrive through connection, challenge, and meaningful work. Students meet regularly with like-minded peers to engage in projects and tasks that stretch their thinking, creativity, and problem solving. Learning experiences are intentionally planned to challenge and grow students across the three areas identified through CogAT results: verbal, non-verbal, and quantitative.
Our Gifted and Talented certified teachers love finding fresh ways to push students’ thinking while also supporting them as they take academic risks, collaborate, and share their ideas. Gifted students have opportunities to participate in a speech contest, as well as the science and engineering fairs, building communication skills and confidence while exploring their interests.
In addition to pull out services, enrichment opportunities are also available during regular instruction as extension and challenge are built into the curriculum. Students may also access additional advanced learning options such as Step Up Math, along with Geometry and Algebra, allowing students to continue growing at an appropriately challenging pace.
Program Details
Legacy Traditional School understands that Gifted students come to school with advanced knowledge and exceptional learning capacity. To address the special needs of these students, Legacy offers an accelerated curriculum and differentiated instruction including the incorporation of “Depth and Complexity” (Kaplan, 2000) in all subject areas in the general education classroom.
Legacy also believes that gifted student instruction must involve the utilization of the upper levels of the “Webb’s Depth of Knowledge (DOK)” academic rigor scale (Webb, 2009), therefore 80% of the lesson activities and questioning techniques in the gifted classes are inspired by the third and fourth levels (Strategic Reasoning and Extended Learning) of the DOK scale.
Students in the gifted program will have dedicated instruction time each week, outside of their normal classes, for gifted instruction. The gifted teacher will create a weekly schedule where students in elementary grades are pulled out of their classes for gifted instruction.
